Operation Overflow Winter Shelter
Operation Overflow offering emergency shelter to the homeless during the coldest months of Winter.
OPERATION OVERFLOW… is an emergency shelter that opens its doors to the homeless on nights
when the local FISH shelter is full. Operating from November-April, it is housed in 4 different sites
in downtown Torrington, rotating monthly and has served hundreds of winter guests since opening in the fall of 2003.
Operation Overflow is generously supported by the Greater Torrington faith community including
the members of Beth El Synagogue, Calvary Baptist Church, Center Congregational Church,
First United Methodist Church, Harwinton Congregational Church, St. Peter, St. Francis,
St. Mary and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Churches and Trinity Episcopal Church.
Additional support has been given by the Torrington Women’s Club.
FISH, Inc. of Torrington is also an invaluable partner in the mission of Operation Overflow.
A NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS
Operation Overflow relies on hundreds of volunteers to care for the homeless.
Different Volunteer Roles include:
Overnight Volunteer
Male and Female, stay overnight at the site. Hours: 9 PM- 6 AM
(1 hour training session required)
Site-Coordinator
Greets and screens guests at FISH, completes paperwork for sign-in, transports guests
in own vehicle from FISH to the site, introduces guests and volunteers,
does not stay overnight at site. Hours: 8-9:30 PM, one-week shifts.
Site Host/Hostesses
Arranges to have their site unlocked each night as needed, oversees equipment
storage at site, arranges for laundry, schedules volunteers for that site. Hours: as needed for each site.
